NIKOLAUS LEONARD

Leonard is drawn to what he calls the odd within the ordinary — moments that feel slightly out of place, yet are worth noticing. In German, the word merkwürdig captures this idea: something unusual, but also something “worthy of being remembered.” His photographs invite viewers to pause and see these details with fresh eyes.

He discovered photography through fashion photographer Thomas Degen, who gave him his first camera, a Nikon FE once used for Vogue in the 1980s. Those early analog years continue to shape his practice today. Even when working digitally, he approaches each frame with the same restraint as if the roll of film were limited. Each photograph is the result of a deliberate choice rather than a casual capture.
